November 27, 2009, Newsletter Issue #169: Understanding Your Writing Career Options

Tip of the Week

If you want to be a writer, chances are that you are examining your writing career options. In general, you can either choose to be employed by someone or work for yourself. If you decide to start your own business, you're considered a freelance writer.

If you would like to be employed by someone else for your writing career, you can do this by becoming a newspaper reporter, work on staff at a magazine, become a copywriter at a company,  be a technical writer, become a grant writer, and many others. Some positions include writing. For example, an editor may need to write sometimes, so will a member of a marketing department.

As a freelance writer, your options are vast. You can write queries and submit to magazines, newspapers, and other publications. You can become a ghost writer and take on clients and write articles, eBooks, and other forms of content for them. Another lucrative option is to become a freelance copywriter. Many writers also supplement their writing income with their own blogs and websites.

If you're just getting started, this can seem overwhelming. Don't let it be that way. The main thing you need to decide is if you want to get hired at a company or be in business for yourself. Also keep in mind that you can easily do both. You don't need to limit yourself to one or the other. Many writers have other jobs and work on their writing careers when they aren't at work. Once they make enough money with freelance writing, they quit.

Of course, there is another aspect of being a freelance writer - a creative one. Another option is to write books, novels, stories, poems, plays, screenplays, essays, etc. This type of writing brings the writer a lot of personal satisfaction. Again, you can do any kind of writing you want - or all of it. Some writers specialize, others do a little bit of everything. What kind of writer will you be?

You may also notice that over the course of your career, things change. You may start off writing for clients and then decide to get a job at a company. Your first love could be novel writing but you are a freelance copywriter to pay the bills. Everyone has their own path. Just relax and enjoy the ride!
