What is a contraction?

Contraction

A shortened form of a word or phrase in which an apostrophe indicates the omitted letters or words.

Examples:
Don't (for "do not")
Can't (for "cannot")

It's terrible when "it's" is used as a possessive rather than a contraction. Seems to me that it's increasingly a problem in the written language. It's just my observation, and that's about it.
