How do I use commas with abbreviations?

The abbreviations for "etc.," "i.e.," and "e.g." and the abbreviations for academic degrees are parenthetic and should be punctuated accordingly.

Examples:
Letters, packages, etc., should go here.
John Wilson, Ph.D., presided.
